smoke the moon is thrilled to announce Beneath a Loving Sky, a group show curated by Diego Medina. Medina's curation presents a survey of emerging Native artists who play with the conventions of contemporary art’s relationship with Indigenous practice. Beneath a Loving Sky debuts painting and sculpture by Aru Apaza, Nizhonniya Austin, Moonoka Begay, Wills Brewer, Marcus Chormicle, Lakin Epaloose, Sonny Goodnight, Evelyn Mikayla Martin, Brandon Ortiz, and Tatyanna Snyder. The opening of this show coincides with Indian Market, a time of convergence and celebration in Santa Fe. The work is on view from August 14, 2026 - September 20, 2026. Please join us for an opening reception at smoke the moon on August 14th from 5 - 8pm.
Beneath a Loving Sky brings together work that is both rupture and rapture. This show charts a map of divergent paths within a loving whole. Each artist is carving out a space for the fantastic and futuric to converge with the particularities of lineage and ancestral tradition. The material conventions within this show are varied and multi-valent: spanning organic matter, found ephemera, oil paints and industrial material. What emerges is both distillation and potential energy––the artists move from moments of contemplative, graphic rendering to explosive, brushy wall installations to hard-edged sculpture. There is no single path forward, and this show celebrates the juncture as a site of creation.
The sky is both united and fractured. It is our cosmic tether through earthly experience. Beneath a Loving Sky heralds both the day’s renewal and the ground’s support. The eleven artists on view find new ways to mythologize relation with artistic practice, spiritual legacy and inter-subjective creation.
