smoke the moon is pleased to present Field Trip: A Landscape Show in the main gallery. Field Trip brings together work by Johnny Defeo, Diego Medina, Geoffrey Morris, Allegra Toran and Emma White. This show presents a group of painters united by their preoccupation with the superrealities that frame our relationship with the earth. The works in Field Trip use landscape, flora and fauna as the viewfinder for a totalizing reverie. Please join us for an opening reception on July 3, 2026. The show will be on view until August 9, 2026.
These five painters depict the world awash in the colors of dreams. Each artist has honed an approach to the world around them as a relational practice. The works in Field Trip present a different note in the long lineage of landscape painting. Rather than absolution or compositional dominion, the painters look toward something intangible about the earth that lies beneath its surface. Otherworldly and devotional, vistas collapse into each other to emerge in their own composite radiance.
There is an infinite possibility in the world around us. Each artist approaches land as the tether between the sacred and the mundane. Ranging from off-grid Abiquiu, NM to Toronto to New Jersey, the particularities that scaffold each artist’s world range greatly. From desert to city their work threads a devotional wonder, rendering the saturation of earth’s mysteries large and small. The artists approach the world around them as both psychic experience and physical pilgrimage.
The works in Field Trip are field studies in land’s affective dimension. They share an inner life: changing with unknown seasons, like looking long enough until the thing itself morphs into something new. Seen together, the show asks questions about what happens when painting stays open to the full splendor of the natural world.
