smoke the moon is thrilled to present oil paintings by Will Bruno and Alberto Regueira at the inaugural Untitled Art Houston. Bruno and Regueira each possess a soft and skillful hand. The two artists share a pensive surreality—tableaus appearing as transfigured mirages in their work.
Will Bruno (b. 1981, Nashville, TN) is a Santa Fe, New Mexico based painter making work at the onset of another world. His spiritualized painting practice melds plein air hikes deep into the New Mexico desert with a paginated formal strategy that borrows cues from comics. What emerges is a profoundly surreal palette of hazy landscapes and encountered objects. Color itself feels like a slant of light in Bruno’s work. Each of Bruno’s paintings carries its own interior reference: doubled vision and trickster figures cut interjections into mystic realms. Bruno’s scenes emerge like a psychic mirage; a washy hand rendering the fervor of the desert’s spiritual terrain.
Alberto Regueira (B. 1994 Havana, Cuba) is a Havana based artist. His paintings are richly rendered scenes with an aura that is both nostalgic and visionary. Regueira’s work appears as if viewed through a memory; the ambient intimacies of a place taking center stage. Twinned spires glistening beyond a baseball diamond and winking bushes are balanced against the eariness of a park at night. There is a perpetuity to the promise captured in his work: a world around us filled with slow moments of unknown potential. Regueira is painting the breadth of a moment: deeply pigmented and with an internal shimmer.
Bruno and Regueira share a devotion to uninhibited otherworldly observation. Their paintings are cloaked in an ecstatic haze, telling secrets about what happens when a place becomes more than the sum of its parts.
