smoke the moon is proud to present the work of the Los Angeles based artists Hye-Shin Chun and Matthew Rosenquist at Future Fair 2025. Both Chun and Rosenquist are whimsically devoted to the world contained within their work. Sociality and interiority emerge in a spiraling gaze in each artist’s works.
Hye-Shin Chun’s oil paintings on linen are a dreamlike reinterpretation of moments felt or observed around her. Chun’s days center around her domestic space, raising her daughter and working remotely. This interior space has a historical tie to feminine worldmaking and is translated through Chun’s work. Her paintings are misty; each one shifting between figuration and abstraction with hue and perspective colliding to make a wondrous haze of life’s intimate moments. The proximate gaze in Chun’s work is an ever-changing arena of wistful observation and brushy rendering.
Matthew Rosenquist is paying homage to the absurdity of people and objects. Merging his background in woodworking and painting, Rosenquist creates sculptures that deify cultural objects and quotidian scenes. He begins with rough wood slabs, and through additive and subtractive processes his sculptures emerge. Once carved, the sculptures are transformed through the application of jovial, vivid oil paints. What materializes is nostalgically offbeat cultural ephemera and pointedly comical observations of human behavior. Rosenquist astutely distills the strangeness of the world around us into moments of shared joy.
Throughout Rosenquist and Chun’s work there is a meditative lightness on material and form. Figures and objects are given the same precedence, their intricacies and loving absurdities come through with a precise eye. The two artists find common ground in their heightened attention to the power contained within a scene; texture and emotion guiding their way. In each, a mastery and love of their particular material is met with subject matter that teeters carefully in the gap between reality and surreality.
ABOUT FUTURE FAIR:
